President Ilves speaking about our eastern neighbours: Brussels does not believe in promises alone

23.07.2013

The European Union's Eastern Partnership policy was an important topic at President Toomas Hendrik Ilves's meeting with Polish head of state Bronisław Komorowski, and later, during his presentation at the annual meeting of Polish ambassadors.

The interests of the European Union and Ukraine, Georgia, Moldova as well as the eastern partners of our Community must be mutual and sincere, the Estonian head of state emphasised.

"The European Union is ready to support, and this is in the interests of all of democratic Europe, the adoption of European values in politics, the economy and the administration of justice, and the visible result could be European Union Association Agreements," President Ilves said.

"However, the precondition for this is the purposeful and credible actions of Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova in their convergence with the European Union and the principles on which the European Union is based," said the Estonian head of state. "Words and promises are not enough. Brussels does not believe in promises alone. Actions are needed. However, first these countries must make comprehensible and final decisions about where they want to belong."

Thus, according to President Ilves, the European Union must simultaneous demonstrate goodwill, be patient and demanding, as well as uncompromising with Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova regarding the intensification of their democratic reforms.
