Estonian Head of State: Georgia’s success story is important for all the countries in the region

“Georgia is not alone, it has friends, its activities are being observed, and we are interested in its welfare,” confirmed Toomas Hendrik Ilves, the Estonian Head of State at his meeting with Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili in Tbilisi today at the beginning of his state visit.

“We acknowledge your impressive achievements in the fields of democracy and the economy and encourage you to continue your reforms, which are the only way to build a European society, to guarantee internal prosperity and stability, and make the country more difficult to injure from the outside,” said President Ilves. “In this way, Georgia can also be a confident partner for the European Union and NATO.”

President Ilves encouraged Georgia to take advantage of Europe’s Neighborhood Policy, and to focus on strengthening socio-economic reforms and the rule of law.

“Georgia’s success story, which can serve as a guide to be followed, is important for all the countries in the region,” said the Estonian Head of State.

Georgia’s success in the direction of the EU and NATO would confirm the irreversibility of democratic reforms and would be a security guarantee for the country said President Ilves, adding that Estonia will support Georgia’s participation in the NATO Membership Action Program (MAP) at the next NATO Summit in 2008 in Bucharest.

The Estonian Head of State thanked President Saakashvili for the Georgia’s support during the past few weeks, when Estonia has been under an attack of Russian propaganda.
