The Estonian presidential couple, on an official visit in Croatia from today until the day after tomorrow, presented a silver-edged crystal glass decanter made at the Johannes Lorup's glass factory as a gift to the Croatian Head of State Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović and to her husband, Jakov Kitarović – a wooden bowtie and wooden-silver cufflinks also made in Estonia.

The tragic period of Estonian history in the first part of the 20th century was vividly reflected in the life of Johannes Lorup, an enterprising and aspiring man who had fought in the Estonian War of Independence, then establishing the largest ordinary and crystal glass factory in Estonia and becoming the trendsetter in that field – and ending up being deported by the Soviet occupying authorities from his native country to a death camp.

The bowtie, made by hand from natural wenge veneer and finished with natural beeswax at the Estonian family-run company Wooden Lifestyle OÜ, is a gentle hint at the fact that the Croats are considered to have been the initiators of the custom of wearing ties in Europe.

The oak-silver cufflinks were created by artist Maria Valdma.
