Alo Heinsalu, who has worked for the past 10 years as Director of the Office of the Legal Chancellor, will lead the Office of the President of the Republic from 7 April. The decree assigning him to office was signed today by the Head of State, Toomas Hendrik Ilves.

"This is a unique opportunity and professional challenge to work at the helm of the Republic of Estonia – in the Office of the President; however, this is also a logical continuation of my current career in the public service," told Alo Heinsalu (56). "All my current contacts with the Office of the President have shown me that committed officials who are focused on the advancement of Estonia and on serving our country are in service there."

Alo Heinsalu has previously worked as Head of the Office of the Prime Minister, adviser and head of department to the Elections Department and Deputy Director General of the Chancellery of the Riigikogu; he has also worked in local government and regional development departments of the Government Office of the Republic of Estonia.

"Alo Heinsalu's current diversified career in the public service has given him balance and empathy, a strong experience in the successful management of different teams and a sharp eye in perceiving both Estonian and international life," said the current Director of Office of the President, Siim Raie, who will continue as Director General of the National Heritage Board on 6 April.

Upon becoming Director of Office of the President of the Republic, Alo Heinsalu will withdraw from the position of Chairman of the National Electoral Committee, effective as of 6 April. He has been involved in the organisation of elections for 21 years, the last three years as the Chairman of the National Electoral Committee.
