01.02.2015

President Toomas Hendrik Ilves sent a letter of condolences to the Head of State of Germany, Joachim Gauck, on the death of Richard von Weizsäcker, who was President of the Federal Republic of Germany from 1984 to 1994.

"We will remember him as a Great European, whose personal life was closely intertwined with the story of 20th century Europe and who therefore knew and recognised that the future requires a clear understanding of the past. A Europe united and free of any walls and spheres of influence, in which relations between democratic countries are determined by peaceful agreements, was the experiential goal of Richard von Weizsäcker," wrote the Estonian Head of State in a letter of condolence sent to Joachim Gauck, the President of the Federation of Germany.

"A united Europe and united Germany in the European Union including states, such as Estonia, that were left on the darker side of the Iron Curtain during the last century, represent a part of the completed efforts of Richard von Weizsäcker," President Ilves wrote.

He expressed his condolences to the people of Germany, the widow of former President of the Federal Republic of Germany Weizsäcker, Marianne Freifrau von Weizsäcker, and his next of kin and friends in general.
