The Estonian Head of State invited New Zealand to join the NATO Co-operative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence

29.04.2014

The President, Toomas Hendrik Ilves, invited New Zealand to join the NATO Co-operative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence in Tallinn at his meeting with the New Zealand Minister for the Environment, Communication and Information Technology, Amy Adams.

New Zealand is one of the seven partner states that NATO co-operates closely with in the sphere of cyber defence.

According to the Estonian Head of State, both countries consider the development of cyber defence important and confirmed that he understands the concerns of New Zealand related to cyber crime, cyber espionage, hacktivism and terrorism.

"These are the problems that we all share and democratic countries can only stand up against these problems together," President Ilves said.

President Ilves and Minister Adams stated that New Zealand and Estonia could exchange experiences in the sphere of e-governance even more extensively.

The Estonian Head of State emphasised that secure identity authentication and secure data processing represent the foundation of e-governance and this does not conflict with the citizens' right to the inviolability of private life.
