Evelin Ilves met with the cooks of Tabasalu Gymnasium who won the best school cafeteria in Estonia competition

04.12.2012

Evelin Ilves met today with the students and teachers of Tabasalu Gymnasium and sampled a school lunch cooked by the cooks, Liidia Maikina and Merle Indermitte, who won the best school cafeteria in Estonia competition.

Fresh, home-grown produce is offered to children at Tabasalu Gymnasium, a school that has joined the Health Promoting School programme. The school cafeteria caters to around 1,000 people on a daily basis and hot meals are served four times a day – porridge in the morning, school lunch, a daily special offer and a meal for long day groups.

According to Evelin Ilves, a plastic card system, which is linked to the school's student card system, is fantastic as it allows the parent to see what and how many times per day their children are eating. "It is also commendable that the children are offered home-grown vegetables in co-operation with Vääna Farm," added Evelin Ilves.

The spouse of the President of the Republic also inspected the sports complex and library of Tabasalu Gymnasium.

Tabasalu Gymnasium won the title of the best school cafeteria of Estonia in 2012 thanks to the meals cooked by Liidia Maikina and Merle Indermitte, who had made a fish soup from hake fillet, meatloaf with vegetable filling and potato and pumpkin mash, and layered semolina porridge with fruit soup. The Best School Cafeteria competition is aimed at cafeterias and caterers of institutions of general education to raise the level of school lunches and acknowledge cooks for the good work they do on a daily basis. The competition is organised by the National Institute for Health Development.

907 students study at Tabasalu Gymnasium, which also has 119 employees. For additional information, see: www.tabasalu.edu.ee
