Evelin Ilves met in Hiiumaa today with the Lauka school family and discussed the opportunities for local food reaching child care institutions with the developers of the Western Estonia LEADER co-operation project.

"Lauka Basic School prepares school lunches for its students by using fresh and healthy raw materials sourced from local farmers on Hiiumaa Island and by doing so sets a standard for every other child care institution in Estonia. There is no doubt that for this we need to thank the school chef, Aimi Aromatova, who has taken serving good, local food to children to be a matter of pride," Evelin Ilves told.

Evelin Ilves also met in Hiiumaa with the developers of the Western Estonia LEADER co-operation programme, Ly Kaups and Reet Kokovkin, as well as the representatives of LEADER action groups from England and France. A co-operation project supported by LEADER action groups from Hiiumaa, Saaremaa and Läänemaa was launched in 2011 by summoning all of the school and crèche chefs together to look at the possibilities for serving local food to child care institutions.

The co-operation is on-going within the framework of the international "Growing Gastronauts" project. The project involves the investigation of separate short delivery chain implementation in each country with English and French LEADER action groups to exchange experiences of producers and processors and learn from each other. Another trend involves teaching children where food grows and how to cook good food ourselves.

According to Evelin Ilves, desire and courage is usually needed to change something for the better in our work and lives. "People like Aimi Aromatova can definitely inspire many others, in Hiiumaa, on the Estonian mainland and also in England and France," Evelin Ilves added.

In December of last year, Evelin Ilves visited Vääna Manor School, where she told students about healthy eating habits and inspected the school diner and library. In January, Evelin Ilves paid a visit to Johannes Waldorf School and Kindergarten in Rosma village, Põlva rural municipality, while in February she got acquainted with the students of Jüri Gymnasium in Rae Rural Municipality. In March, the First Lady paid visits to Muhu Basic School and Valjala Basic School.
