Today, Evelin Ilves, patron of the Home of the Year competition, congratulated the winners of the competition in Tallinn Town Hall.

“I remember a number of quite posh, yet minimalist Scandinavian designer homes, which completely enchanted our interior architects five years ago, when we first sat down with the panel of judges of the Home of the Year, launched by home magazine Kodukiri. Little by little, the number of homes built by people themselves and their families have found their way into the competition. I would describe 2011 as a Self-made Nice Nest,“ Evelin Ilves told.

“If you know that the warmth of your own hands is accumulated in the walls of your homes, this very warmth will make your home your fortress. But what’s most important – good kids, good people and dear companions come from good homes,” she added.

Quite a number of very small homes – smaller than 30 square metres – reached the finals of the competition, stated Evelin Ilves at today’s event, adding that onevery snug nest she visited was a child-friendly home, which reached through four storeys and was built into one of the old houses in the Pelgulinna district.

The most beautiful home hides itself in a regular Hrutschov period house – its owners, Katri Tühane and Timo Heering, have converted a typical three-room apartment beyond recognition. The public vote award went to a student from Tartu, Catherine Karu, whose small apartment stood out with a number of space-saving solutions.

This was the 15th Home of the Year competition, organised by home magazine Kodukiri.
