The spouse of the President of the Republic of Estonia, Evelin Ilves, was one of the members of the jury in the "Saaremaa's Best Conserve" competition organized by the Meie Maa newspaper today, presenting her own special "Healthy Choice" award and helping to select the best of the best from the 160 entries.

The winner in the Savoury Conserve category was Helgi Altmets for her pumpkin and sea buckthorn berry salsa, while triumphing in the Sweet Conserve category was Kaie Ausmeel-Loot for her apple, carrot and sea buckthorn berry jam.

The ‘Healthy Choice’ award was presented by the First Lady to Kristi Mägi for her pickled beetroot.

The best conserves in the savoury category were selected by a jury comprising Evelin Ilves, GO Spa head chef Toomas Leedu, singer Ivo Linna, amateur gourmand Tauri Sumberg, Saare County governor Kaido Kaasik, competition creator Merit Karise, Kuressaare Vocational School student Juss Lindmäe and MP Imre Sooäär.

The best entries in the sweet category were chosen by a jury comprising GO Spa’s Rita Reemann, Meie Maa editor-in-chief Veiko Visnapuu, Tallinn University Kuressaare College food technology lecturer Eve Kärblane, Kuressaare Vocational School student Rasmus Vinn and teacher Irina Arhipova, Merle Prii representing families with many children, NPO Saaremaa Kodukant representative Reet Viira and Meie Maa journalist Veljo Kuivjõgi.

This year’s competition was the third in its history. Around a hundred conserves were entered in each of the previous editions, with this year’s level breaking all records.
