President Ilves to go on a state visit to Romania and a working visit to Moldova

This evening, President Toomas Hendrik Ilves and Evelin Ilves will fly to Romania, where the President will begin his two-day state visit. From Bucharest, President Ilves will go on to a working visit in Moldova.

The Estonian Head of State will meet with the President of Romania Traian Băsescu, President of the Senate Crin Antonescu, Prime Minister Victor Ponta, Minister of Foreign Affairs Titus Corlăţean, and Communications Minister Dan Nica; he will also attend a working lunch at the Romanian Chamber of Commerce.

Meetings with Romanian leaders will focus on the European Union and NATO policies of our two countries, responsible fiscal and economic policy and the Eastern Partnership Programme of the EU.

On early Thursday, 3 October, President Ilves will meet with representatives of the civic initiative "Let's Do It, Romania!" in Bucharest, who were inspired by the Estonian campaign "Teeme ära!". Last weekend, more than 165,000 volunteers took part in the Romanian cleanup day.

President Ilves and Evelin Ilves will lay a wreath on the grave of the unknown soldier at Carol I Park in Bucharest. The Estonian Head of State will also visit the Memorial of Rebirth and commemorate the more than a thousand Romanians who lost their lives in the Revolution of 1989, and will lay a wreath at the monument of Corneliu Coposu, referred to as the conscience of Romania.

Evelin Ilves will accompany Maria Băsescu, the wife of the President of Romania, to the Cotroceni National Museum and the kindergarten for hearing-impaired children. Evelin Ilves will also visit the Nationial Village Museum in Bucharest and the historically and culturally significant Sinaia Monastery and Peleș Castle.

Tomorrow evening, President Traian Băsescu and Maria Băsescu will hold a formal state dinner at the Cotroceni Palace in honour of President Ilves and Evelin Ilves.

The official delegation of President Ilves includes the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence Mikk Marran, the chairman of the board of the Estonian Chamber of Commerce and Industry Toomas Luman and the representative of "Teeme ära!" Meelika Hirmo.

The business delegation includes Allan Aru (Featherie Invest OÜ/Ecometal AS), Mihail Beregoi and Tiit Vapper (Real Systems AS), Alar Salum (Krimelte AS), Hannes Plinte (Girf OÜ/GOSwift), Kaido Saar (BigBank), Jaanus Tamm (Defendec OÜ), and Mait Palts and Liis Lehesalu from the Estonian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

On late Thursday, 3 October, President Ilves will leave Bucharest for a two-day working visit in Moldova, which hopes to initial the free trade and association agreements with the European Union at the Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius in November.

In Chișinău, the Estonian Head of State will meet with the President of Moldova Nicolae Timofti, the speaker of the Parliament Igor Corman and the head of government Iurie Leancă.

At the invitation of Prime Minister Leancă, President Ilves will speak at the high-level international cyber security conference "Digital Security in a Digitally Interconnected World".

President Ilves will be the first foreign leader to visit and place flowers at the newly-opened memorial to the victims of totalitarianism.

President Ilves will return to Estonia late on Saturday 5 October.
