The President of the Republic has appointed Mart Laar and Priit Pikamäe as candidates for the positions of Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Bank of Estonia and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, respectively

09.04.2013

The President, Toomas Hendrik Ilves, sent a proposal to appoint current Member of Parliament, former Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, Mart Laar, to the position of Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Bank of Estonia and the current Chairman of the Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court, Priit Pikamäe, to the position of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Estonia.

"Mart Laar, who has withdrawn from party politics having twice served as Prime Minister of the Republic of Estonia and was one of the chief architects of the economic reforms that laid the foundation for Estonia's success, is a tough person with excellent will-power; he is the appropriate person to continue his career as the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Bank of Estonia, now that Estonia has made it to the euro area," President Ilves told.

The five year term in office of the current Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Bank of Estonia, Jaan Männik, will end on 12 June of this year. Should the Riigikogu agree with the proposal of the President of the Republic and appoint Mart Laar to the position of Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Bank of Estonia, he will leave the position of a member of the Parliament.

"Doctor of Law, Priit Pikamäe, is a younger generation lawyer, characterised by a very strong academic background and extensive experience in the sphere of justice. Before commencing upon the career of a justice of the Supreme Court, he worked at the Board of Citizenship and Migration, the ministries of Foreign Affairs and Justice and subsequently in the municipal and circuit courts of Tallinn. This will all add to a strong personal professional foundation, which the new Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Estonia can rely upon," said President Ilves.

The nine year term of authorities of the current Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Estonia, Märt Rask, will end on 12 September of this year.
