Presidents of Estonia and Latvia: Eastern Europe will always remember Margaret Thatcher’s support for freedom and democracy in our part of the continent

08.04.2013

At a meeting at Ärma Farm today, President Toomas Hendrik Ilves and his Latvian counterpart President Andris Bērziņš were sad to hear of the death of former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher.

"The United Kingdom has lost a great leader and a great politician, whose influence extended far beyond the borders of her own nation," the presidents said in a joint statement. "Countries in Eastern Europe will always remember Baroness Thatcher's resolve in her stance against communist regimes and her support for freedom and democracy in our part of the continent."

Presidents Ilves and Bērziņš extended their condolences to Mrs. Thatcher's family, to current British prime minister David Cameron and to the people of the United Kingdom.
