President Ilves: The Republic of Estonia will make every possible effort to bring home the maritime guards imprisoned in India

President Toomas Hendrik Ilves met today with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Marina Kaljurand, to discuss the case of the 14 Estonian maritime guards who were sentenced to five years in prison in India.

"I share the huge worry and uncertainty of the detained crew members of the anti-piracy vessel and their next of kin, as such a ruling was unexpected for all of us," admitted President Ilves.

"Estonia will use all the tools made available by its diplomatic and political contacts to bring our fellow citizens – citizens of the European Union – back home again," emphasised the Head of State.
