President Ilves to depart for a work visit to Warsaw

20.12.2015

For the next two days, the President, Toomas Hendrik Ilves, will be on a working visit in Warsaw. He will meet with the Head of State of Poland, Andrzej Duda, and deliver a presentation at a conference organised by the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA) as a member of the international Advisory Council of the Center. He will also take part in a memorial event to recall the activities of the former president of Poland, Lech Kaczyński, in enhancing the influence of Central and Eastern Europe.

Over the last decade, Estonia and Poland have become close foreign and security policy allies. The meeting of presidents Ilves and Duda will focus on the challenges faced by the European Union – the strength and solidarity of the union is being tested by the refugee crisis. The heads of state will also discuss other issues of importance for NATO, which is attaching increasing importance to deterrence policy, as the next summit of the alliance will take place in 2016 in Warsaw.

President Ilves will speak about regional security in Warsaw at a speech conference being held by the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA) in co-operation with influential Polish newspaper Rzeczpospolita; the Editor in Chief of the Bartosz Węglarczyk newspaper will be the moderator for the public address by the Estonian Head of State. Since December of last year, President Ilves has also been a member of the international Advisory Council of CEPA think tank, which focuses on Central and Eastern European studies.

He will also take part in an international memorial event entitled "Sovereignty, Solidarity, Security. Lech Kaczyński and Central and Eastern Europe", which is being led by President Duda and held to recall the foreign policy contribution of the former president of Poland, Lech Kaczyński, in the integration of the eastern partners of the European Union, securing the safety of our region and enhancing the influence of Central and Eastern European countries.
