President Toomas Hendrik Ilves on the Malaysia Airlines plane crash

Estonia is devastated by the Malaysia Airlines plane crash in eastern Ukraine on 17 July, which claimed the lives of nearly 300 people, and expresses its condolences to the families and friends of all of the passengers and crew members who were on flight MH17.

It is crucial to initiate and conduct an international, objective, prompt and competent investigation into the cause of the crash. Any attempts to hinder, mislead or slow the investigation are unacceptable.

In the broader context, this tragic event once again confirms the need to put an end to the violence of Russian-supported separatist armed units in eastern Ukraine.
