President Toomas Hendrik Ilves, on a working visit in London, discussed the future of e-government and e-services in Europe with the British Minister for IT Affairs, Francis Maude.

President Ilves gave the British Minister of IT Affairs an overview of the co-operation between Estonia and Finland in using a common data exchange layer. "We wish to make e-services cross-border and compatible. Estonia and Finland are about to begin that kind of co-operation through the common data exchange layer," the President said, giving an example of how a Finnish pensioner visiting Pärnu could fill out his or her prescription made out in Finland in an Estonian pharmacy.

"That would be the first time protected data moved across national borders securely. Let us hope this sets an example to the whole of Europe and that in the future, more and more countries will join that kind of co-operation," President Ilves noted.

The meeting also focused on cyber security, ensuring the privacy of data and identifying people in cyber space. The Head of State introduced Estonian solutions by demonstrating X-Road and the ID-card.
