Estonian Head of State to meet Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Union

The President, Toomas Hendrik Ilves, will meet in Brussels today with the President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy, to discuss data exchange between the European Union Member States and the compatibility of e-services.

According to President Ilves, Estonia will advocate the implementation of a digital signature and reliable identification system as well as trans-European data exchange and e-services and ensure their compatibility across the European Union.

Neelie Kroes, European Commissioner for Digital Agenda, will also take part in the meeting.

Since last November, President Ilves has been in charge, at the request of the European Commission, of the Steering Board of the European Cloud Partnership, which aims to promote the implementation of cross-border public digital services in the European business and public sector.

Cloud data processing stands for storing data (for example, text files, images, videos) and software in remote computers that the users can access, using the Internet, by means of devices of their own choice.

In 2011-2012, President Ilves chaired the European Union e-health work group.

This is a one-day working visit to Brussels; the President will return to Estonia late tonight.
