The President of Estonia discussed the need for carefully conceived infrastructure in Europe with the Polish Prime Minister

In Warsaw yesterday, President Toomas Hendrik Ilves met with Polish Prime Minister Jarosław Kaczyński. At the meeting, the talks focused on several important issues related to power engineering and infrastructure, including the development of the Via Baltica and Rail Baltica, the establishment of the Baltic Sea gas pipeline, and the future of the Ignalina nuclear power plant.

Speaking about the railway and highway connections passing through the Baltic countries, President Ilves noted that, in the European economic space, the creation of better routes of communication between European countries, which are increasingly tied to each other, is of critical importance.

Speaking on energy topics, both the President of Estonia and the Polish Prime Minister acknowledged that in the name of energy security all European countries must struggle together and various initiatives—like the Baltic Sea gas pipeline—must be carefully assessed.

“The Baltic Sea is our common sea. Therefore, the coastal countries must weigh the environmental risks related to the pipeline very seriously,” said the Estonian Head of State.
