President Ilves to meet with the heads of state of Finland and Hungary in Helsinki and address the World Congress of the Finno-Ugric Peoples in Lahti

President Toomas Hendrik Ilves will today embark on a one-day working visit to Finland. In Helsinki, he will have a bilateral meeting with the Head of State of Hungary, János Áder, to discuss the state of affairs in the European Union, the changed security situation and Estonian-Hungarian relations. The President of Finland, Sauli Niinistö, will give a business lunch for his Estonian and Hungarian colleagues.

The three heads of state will then continue to Lahti to address the 7th World Congress of the Finno-Ugric Peoples, which this time is focusing on "The Finno-Ugric peoples – towards sustainable development".

174 delegates and 269 observers from the Finno-Ugric and Samoyed peoples are expected to take part in the congress.

Estonia has sent a delegation of 20 members, led by Tõnu Seilenthal, to the congress. In addition, observers from the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, the Estonian Embassy in Helsinki, the Estonian Institute of Human Rights and Finno-Ugric communities that live in Estonia will attend the congress.

The congress will conclude with an Estonian cultural programme, as the next World Congress of the Finno-Ugric Peoples will take place in Estonia in 2020.
