PRELIMINARY NOTICE: The President of the Republic to participate in the events marking the 50th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and Freedom Fight in Budapest

President Toomas Hendrik Ilves will leave for a working visit to the Republic of Hungary on Sunday, October 22, where he will participate in the events marking the 50th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and Freedom Fight in Budapest.

On Sunday evening the President of the Republic will attend a commemorative gala performance in the Hungarian State Opera House and a festive dinner hosted by President László Sólyom and Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány in honour of the heads of state in the Museum of Fine Arts.

On Monday President Ilves will participate in the flag raising ceremony on Kossuth square and will place flowers at the foot of the monument dedicated to the victims of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. The Estonian Head of State will visit the exhibition entitled “Gratitude to the heroes of liberty” and will participate in the ceremony dedicated to the passing of the Budapest ’56 liberty declaration in Hungarian Parliament.

The Estonian Head of State will return to Estonia on Monday evening, October 23.

A number of heads of state and government, public figures and historians from all over the world will participate in the events marking the 50th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and Freedom Fight in Budapest, among others, for example, the presidents of Latvia, Lithuania and Finland, the Secretary-General of NATO and the President of the European Commission.
