"Estonia will help Ukraine in reforms - President Ilves", The National Radio Company of Ukraine, 12.09.2014

Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves believes that it is extremely difficult to carry out economic, administrative, and social reforms in Ukraine while the country is factually in a state of war and promises that Estonia will do everything it can to help Ukraine on this path.

Speaking at the European Strategy conference in Kyiv on Friday, Ilves commended President Poroshenko on his "herculean reform efforts" under conditions of war and said that Europe should do more to stop Russia's aggression against Ukraine. According to him, Europe should make clear that one country's desire to associate with the EU or apply for NATO membership cannot be the reason for someone to meddle in its own affairs. "This year the key underlying principles of security in Europe have been destroyed. The Ukrainian matter is not local. Ukraine has become the focus of security problems in Europe, but any other country may soon follow in its wake. Everyone in the EU should support Ukraine and should see the restoration of peace and security on the continent as the main task," Ilves said.
