04.07.2013

Today at the ICT Demo Center, President Toomas Hendrik Ilves met with the European Commissioner for the Digital Agenda, Neelie Kroes, who arrived in Tallinn in connection with the meeting of the Steering Board of the European Cloud Partnerhip hosted by President Ilves.

The Estonian Head of State and Commissioner Kroes discussed the future of cloud computing in the European Union.

"These past months have confirmed once again that it is vital to determine European clouds that are subject to the laws of the European Union and are completely safe for users, because as of now, 95 per cent of cloud service used in the European Union belong to US companies," President Ilves emphasised. "Concern for protecting privacy should not make countries withdraw and create their own closed systems; on the contrary - it is important to strive for the creation of pan-European e-services and, of course, then use the secure European cloud."

The development of cloud computing should include the opinions of member states, and the agreements that are made cannot be based solely on business interests, he noted and added: "The European data protection laws need updating and we must understand that large private companies can collect more data than any country ever could."
