Picture news: President Ilves met with Major General James A. Adkins

The President, Toomas Hendrik Ilves, met today in Kadriorg with the Adjutant General of the Maryland National Guard, Major General James A. Adkins, who is visiting Estonia in relation to the participation of the Maryland National Guard in the Saber Strike 2013 exercise.

Also this year, 20 years of co-operation between the Maryland National Guard and the Estonian Defence League will be celebrated; Major General Adkins has been a part of this co-operation since the very beginning and therefore knows the Estonian Defence Forces and our defence force members very well.

National Guards of various states of the USA have official co-operation relations in 65 countries all over the world; largely thanks to Major General Adkins, the relationship between Estonia and Maryland is close and efficient and, therefore, is repeatedly put forward as a good example of co-operation by various representatives of USA.

Saber Strike, a training exercise of the US European Command, will take place on 3 to 14 June in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, simultaneously, and is aimed at practicing co-operation for joint operations. In total, 1,800 defence force members from Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Finland, Poland, the United States of America, the United Kingdom and NATO Multinational Corps Northeast will take part in the exercise.

This year, the command staff of the exercise will be located in Lithuania. Infantry company Estcoy-19, deployed to Afghanistan with the next rotation, is practicing co-operation with the army units of the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Latvia and Lithuania in the Adaži polygon, Latvia. A-10 fighter airplanes and KC-135 tanker planes of the United States of America are located in the Ämari Airfield, Estonia; staff of NATO Multinational Corps Northeast is operating in Tapa military campus; the 1st infantry brigade will practice command of units and co-operation with the staffs of NATO Multinational Corps Northeast and the United States of America at the Simulation Centre in Tartu.
