The President, Toomas Hendrik Ilves has posthumously awarded the Order of the Estonian Red Cross, Class V, to Alexander Jakovlev, Rescuer in Charge of Pärnu Rescue Command of West Rescue Centre, who drowned in service on 13 April.


A rescue worker of Pärnu Rescue Company, Alexander Jakovlev, drowned on 13 April 2012 in service at Sindi dam, in the town of Sindi, as he went with his colleague to save a man who was in difficulty in an inflatable boat. The boat of the rescue worker was caught up in the eddies, capsized and the rescue workers fell into water and were pulled down by eddies. One of them – Alexander Jakovlev – went under. Paramedics tried to resuscitate him, but their attempts were unsuccessful.
