President Ilves expresses condolences to the next of kin and colleagues of deceased rescue worker, Alexander Jakovlev

13.04.2012

The tragic news about young rescue worker Alexander Jakovlev, who perished in the eddies of River Pärnu while attempting to rescue a person in difficulty, makes us bow our heads and think of pain.

I express my condolences to the mother and father of Alexander Jakovlev, his next of kin and all of his colleagues.

Let us think about the greatness of people who have chosen the profession of rescue worker and how they serve all of us as they work at the boundaries or risk and face self-sacrifice.

A rescue worker of Pärnu Rescue Company, Alexander Jakovlev, who was born in 1987, drowned today in service at Sindi dam, in town of Sindi, as he went with his colleague to save a man who was in difficulty in an inflatable boat. The boat of the rescue worker was caught up in the eddies, capsized and the rescue workers fell into water and were pulled down by eddies. One of them – Alexander Jakovlev – went under. Paramedics tried to resuscitate him, but their attempts were unsuccessful.
