President of the Republic declares Ardo Hansson the next President of Eesti Pank (Bank of Estonia)

President Toomas Hendrik Ilves today signed a resolution to name Ardo Hansson the next President of Eesti Pank (Bank of Estonia), based on the proposal of the Supervisory Board of the Bank, made on 1 February. Hansson's seven years in office will commence on 7 June.

Ardo Hansson is currently Chief of the Economics Unit in the World Bank China Office. Hansson, who has been working in the World Bank since 1998, has also worked for Eastern European and Balkan countries. He was a member of the Supervisory Board of Eesti Pank in the years 1993-1998, economic counsellor to the Estonian Prime Minister from 1992 to 1995 and again in 1997, and he was advisor to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1991-1992. Hansson was also a member of the Monetary Reform Committee that oversaw the transition to the Estonian kroon. Previously, he worked at a number of reputable universities. He has published numerous articles on economic policies and has a Ph.D. from Harvard University.

The term of office of the current President of Eesti Pank, Andres Lipstok, will come to an end on 6 June.
