President Ilves expressed condolences to Belgium

14.12.2011

“Christmas peace must reign again following the grief and sorrow that we have felt in learning of the attack against hundreds of people at a Christmas market in Liege, Belgium, which has resulted in numerous victims. Estonia is reaching out its hand with condolences to Belgium; our thoughts are with the next of kin of the victims and we wish a speedy recovery for the wounded,” wrote the President, Toomas Hendrik Ilves, in his letter of condolences to the King of Belgium, Albert II, following the horrible tragedy in Liege yesterday.

“The incomprehensible evil that has struck us during the Christmas season forces us to search for reasons. However, this will not mean that we will close our societies to others as we all do now: openness and democracy are always stronger than anger and evil,” the Estonian Head of State assured.
