President Toomas Hendrik Ilves's obituary to Ülo Nugis

18.11.2011

Ülo Nugis was one of the leaders of and catalysts for the restoration of Estonia's independence.

He was the man who chaired the supreme council meeting on 20 August 1991, where it was decided to restore Estonia's independence, and he was a crucial guardian of that independence.

With his statesmanlike thoughtfulness and resolve he helped to restore the parliamentary tradition in Estonia, first as head of the supreme council and later as the speaker of the parliament.

Ülo Nugis knew and guarded the significance, value and dignity of the parliament in a parliamentary democratic country.

I send my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Ülo Nugis.
