President Ilves met with Estonian social democrats

15.07.2011

At the council of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), President Toomas Hendrik Ilves today discussed the possibilities that Estonia should investigate in the next decade with the chairman of the party, Sven Mikser. The President also explained his ideas regarding the organisation of the Republic of Estonia, including issues that are linked to the authority of the office of President.

After having achieved the main goals of national independence and developed into a country that is being highlighted as a model for other countries in both the European Union and euro zone, Estonia must now focus on improving the life quality of its people as a society and, above all, as a country, by increasing the country’s capability to protect its biggest riches and shared human assets – Estonian people, President Ilves told.

According to the President, Estonia must not get entangled in the models that brought success for 10–15 years and stick to competitive advantages of yesterday, as society and the economy have both changed considerably.

The Head of State also repeated his position of supporting Estonia’s perseverance as a strong parliamentary republic and the indirect elections of the President, as the power concentrated on a president who is elected under the direct election procedure would become a threat for democracy. If the limits of the powers of the government, parliament and head of state were to remain the same, the people would be soon disappointed in direct elections and the directly elected president, as the opportunities available to him would be conflict with public expectations.

The SDP invited its former chairman, Ilves, to the council meeting to listen to the assessment given by the Head of State of the work that he has done over the last five years. In May, President Ilves also gave a presentation at the session of the council of Pro Patria and Res Publica Union.

SDP has announce its intention to propose the candidacy of Toomas Hendrik Ilves for the office of President at the end of August and support him being elected for a second term in office.
