“Over the last very complicated years, Latvian head of states have shown responsibility both to their own country and to the Baltic Sea region as whole,” acknowledged the President, Mr. Toomas Hendrik Ilves, at his working meeting today with the Latvian Head of State, Mr. Valdis Zatlers.

Presidents Ilves and Zatlers met for the last time as head of states, as the office of Latvian President will be soon welcome Mr. Andris Bērziņš. Today’s working meeting in Salacgriva near the Estonian-Latvian border took place at the invitation of President Zatlers.

“We have seen and experienced that the success of one Baltic state has a positive impact on all of the others and vice versa – difficulties in one country damage the reputation of the whole region, as we look superficially, from the outside,” President Ilves told.

“This is the reason why ‘responsibility’ is the main key word in our regional co-operation,” emphasised the Estonian Head of State. He suggested the adoption of national financial and economic policy decisions, the resolving of projects important for energy security and establishment of modern transport connections with Europe as examples.
