President Ilves to depart for working visit to US

The President, Mr. Toomas Hendrik Ilves, will fly to Washington tomorrow, where the main subject of his two-day working visit will be cyber security.

The Estonian Head of State will meet with the Cyber Command (CYBERCOM) of the United States of America and with General Keith B. Alexander, the Commander of the US Cyber Command, who is also the Director of the US National Security Agency, NSA. President Ilves and General Alexander will discuss cyber security, which is becoming one of the most important areas for NATO.

President Ilves, who was invited by the internationally influential Trilateral Commission, will give a presentation, as one of the head of states of the European Union Member States, at a cyber security session as part of the Trilateral Commission’s annual conference. His partners include the former National Security Director of the United States of America, Mr. Dennis Blair, President of Australian Institute of International Relations, Mr. Ian Dudgeon, and General Alexander.

In Washington, President Ilves will present the Class III Order of the Cross of Terra Mariana, which was awarded to Mr. Michael Turner Evanoff. Mr. Evanoff, the former security leader of NATO’s Head Office and a current high-ranking official in the Foreign Affairs Department of the United States of America, was awarded a decoration of the Republic of Estonia for his considerable contribution to securing Estonia’s security as a NATO member state and for the successful co-ordination of the efforts of the alliance in the sphere of counter-intelligence and fighting terrorism.

Preident Ilves will be back in Estonia on 10 April.
