President Ilves calls for recognition of emerging talents in Estonia

25.03.2011

In opening this year’s Tallinn Music Week, the President, Mr. Toomas Hendrik Ilves, encouraged the world music community to closely monitor young emerging Estonian talents and called on the Estonian music audience to recognise our best before they become famous abroad.

“In my Independence Day speech this year I said that we are sparse with our praise for our talented and diligent people unless they have already won recognition outside Estonia. Let us change this attitude and recognise that many interesting things are happening in our music from classical music to rock music,” President Ilves said. “It is only a question of time before the innovative inquisitiveness of our creative people attracts the attention of people in other parts of the world and Estonia will be rightfully considered a hot spot of creativity.”

The Estonian Head of State, who spoke to more than a hundred music journalists, concert promoters and producers, described the journey of Arvo Pärt from a little-known yet original creator who was held in contempt by the authorities of that time to a world-famous composer whose unique style has left its impression on the classical music of the late 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century.

“A similar future may await those performers who perform in this year’s Tallinn Music Week programme,” President Ilves emphasised.
