President Ilves commemorates victims of 1944 March bombing

09.03.2011

The President, Mr. Toomas Hendrik Ilves, lit a commemoration candle tonight in Harju Street, Tallinn, to commemorate all of the victims of the 1944 March bombing.

67 years ago, when the front line reached Tallinn, which was then occupied by Nazi Germany, approximately one fifth of the buildings in Tallinn were destroyed and one half were badly damaged as a consequence of a late night air raid by the Soviet Army on 9 March, which continued until the early morning of 10 March; a large part of the town centre was burnt down. Approximately 60 civilians were killed and more than 500 wounded in the air raid.
