“Mr. Bruno Mölder has successfully proven that world-class science is possible in Estonia. He returned to Estonia despite having studied in a number of top-ranking foreign universities. I am delighted that such a talent has returned home,” said the President, Mr. Toomas Hendrik Ilves, today in Kadriorg, when handing over the Young Scientist Award of the Cultural Foundation of the President of the Republic to Mr. Bruno Mölder.

“Young scientists remaining or returning to Estonia is important for all of us but, above all, for the reputation of our education,” President Ilves added.

Mr. Bruno Mölder thanked the President and the Cultural Foundation for granting him the Young Scientist Award and confirmed the importance of extending financial support to scientists.

“Otherwise, I wouldn’t be standing here today. I am lucky that my youth coincides with the time that Estonia regained its independence and the chance to apply for various support. I used to be a poor student,” recalled Mr. Mölder, whose field of study is theoretical philosophy, and in particular the philosophy of mind, which is one of the main spheres of analytical philosophy.

Mr. Mölder, who returned to Estonia after spending seven years studying in four of the highest ranking foreign universities and is currently teaching courses in epistemology, metaphysics, and philosophy of mind in Tartu University, noted that: “Going abroad to learn and getting into an international field of research is highly important, but apart from all of this, it’s important for me to conduct science in Estonia and in the Estonian language.”

This year, John Benjamins Publishing Company, the renowned publishers of research materials, published Mr. Bruno Mölder’s substantial monograph, in which he develops a particular version of interpretivism by presenting an original version – the ascription theory.

Mölder’s monograph is a further development of his doctoral thesis, which brought him the award for the best dissertation of Konstanz County in 2008.

The Young Scientist Award is granted by the Cultural Foundation of the President of the Republic and sponsored by Väino Kaldoja through direct donations to the foundation. The award amount is 75,000 Estonian kroons.

The prize is designed to be awarded to a young Estonian scientist who conducts research at an Estonian or foreign college, university, or research institution. Candidates must already have completed their doctorate.
