President Ilves congratulates Finnish Head of State on Finland’s Independence Day

06.12.2010

There are many things in common between Estonia and Finland, including the understanding that we must all contribute on a daily basis to ensure both our freedom and independence, wrote the President, Mr. Toomas Hendrik Ilves, in his Independence Day congratulations to the President of Finland, Ms Tarja Halonen.

“I have always been of the opinion that our nations are linked by substance – this resilience and stubbornness has supported both the Finns and Estonians despite many obstacles, and it has helped us to persevere and ultimately reach our goals,” added the Estonian Head of State.

President Ilves stated that Estonia and Finland are closer today than ever – thanks in particular to co-operation and the friendship relations that are prevalent in many spheres. “This is a value to be cherished and developed,” he emphasised.

“We celebrate our independence together on the Independence Day of the Republic of Finland, as Finland’s freedom is also Estonia’s freedom. I am forwarding you and the Finnish people my best, heartfelt wishes on behalf of the people of Estonia,” wrote the Estonian Head of state in his letter of congratulations, sent to Ms Tarja Halonen.
