The President, Mr. Toomas Hendrik Ilves, visited the Estonian National Museum in Tartu, where he viewed the “The Museum Shows Tongue” and “When Fields Were Burning” Exhibitions. The Head of State was also briefed about the possible schedule for constructing the new building of the Estonian National Museum.

“The Museum Shows Tongue” introduces the development of the Estonian language and shows how it has changed over time. It gives visitors an opportunity to try their hand with inventing new words and also allows them to listen to different dialects of the Estonian language. “When Fields Were Burning” is an insight into early agriculture in Estonia, which involved burning vegetation to increased yields.

The Director of the Estonian National Museum, Ms Krista Aru, told President Ilves about the preparation works to erect a new building for the museum.

According to the Head of State, finally building a new house for the Estonian National Museum serves as settling a debt of honour for safekeeping Estonia’s cultural heritage.

“Estonia has been looking forward to having this house for the past 101 years.  The Estonian National Museum and its new home form an essential part of our national infrastructure and sustainability,” President Ilves emphasised.
