The representatives of the Estonian Association of Bakeries brought some school bread today to the President, Mr. Toomas Hendrik Ilves, and Mrs. Evelin Ilves, to celebrate the conclusion of Bread Week.

The tradition of bringing bread to the presidential residence originates back to the period before World War II.

“The fact that we’ve succeeded to maintain the tradition of manufacturing and eating black rye bread and that baking homemade bread is becoming more and more popular forms an important part of our healthy eating habits,” said the patron of the Estonian School Bread project, Mrs. Evelin Ilves.

“I fully support the idea of the Estonian Association of Bakeries to offer free rye bread in schools, aside from the free school milk and fruit, regardless of the European Union not funding this project. Estonia could be a pioneer in this sphere, by maintaining both the traditions and health of children,” Mrs. Evelin Ilves added.

A number of tradition events, like the blessing of rye bread, an open house in a number of bakeries, and various thematic events at schools, kindergartens, and museums took place within Bread Week, which took place from 4th to 19th October. Bread Week will conclude with a traditional harvest thanksgiving in Estonian churches.

The first Bread Week took place back in 1998.
