President Ilves awards the prize for the best wooden building of the year

26.11.2009

“Wooden architecture that blends with time and place enriches our public spaces,” said President Toomas Hendrik Ilves today at KUMU Art Museum, where the president awarded the prize for the best wooden structure of 2009 to architect Sten Ader for his funky modular house in Jõelähtme.

The head of state expressed his hope that wood would be used more and more in the construction of public buildings – for example, local authorities could facilitate the use of wood in constructions. “This would add distinctive character to any town,” stated President Ilves.

“Apart the fact that wooden buildings help to give Estonia a distinctive and memorable look, they also have another dimension,” emphasised the head of state. “By finding more use for wood in buildings in Estonia, we give more work to our wood industry. This means giving more employment to our own people and, in the process, combating one of today’s most serious concerns – an increase in unemployment.”
