President Toomas Hendrik Ilves met in Kadriorg today with Archbishop Dominique François Joseph Mamberti, the Foreign Minister of the Holy See.

“The mutual relations between Estonia and the Holy See have been excellent,” President Ilves stressed.

According to the Estonian Head of State, it is important that significant Christian texts be translated into Estonian, and in the future, our historians should have the opportunity to delve deeper into the Vatican archives.

Estonia is part of the Christian cultural space and our early history was closely associated with the Catholic Church, President Ilves recalled. He added that the Catholic Church in Estonia is highly visible despite its small size – currently there are seven Roman Catholic congregations in Estonia with almost 5,000 members, as well as four Catholic orders.
