President Ilves acknowledges people of Hiiumaa

03.08.2009

President Toomas Hendrik Ilves, who is visiting Hiiumaa until Tuesday, met today with the Hiiu County Governor and the leaders of local governments.

The President of the Republic acknowledged the people of Hiiumaa for their active participation in the development of the Baltic Sea strategy. “The Baltic Sea Strategy is very important for us,” said President Ilves at the meeting. “I’m glad to say that, besides many other issues, more attention has been paid to the population of the Baltic Sea islands as a result of the efforts of the people of Hiiumaa.”

While in Hiiumaa, President Ilves also met with the initiators of the citizenship movement. “I can see the excellent potential of the citizen movement of Hiiumaa, not just for Estonia but in wider scope,” stressed the Head of State. “There’s no doubt that such a partial isolation gives an island its own identity, which can and should be introduced and shown to as many other people as possible.“

Within the framework of the visit, President Ilves also visited the recently-opened Hiiumaa Waste Station and paid visits to B-Plast and Plastiktoos in the industrial area of Käina. The President completed his day by visiting the organic production enterprise of the Kaptein family and also met with representatives from the Lauri and Tõnise organic farms.
