In the course of the visit, the Head of State became acquainted with the ABB electrical machines and industrial electronics factories in Jüri.

During the meeting, ideas were exchanged on the current state and future prospects of the economy, as well as problems related to power engineering. President Ilves noted that despite the economic recession, the energy sector continues to be viable and this thanks partially to the development of renewable energy.

The ABB managers provided an overview of the company’s activities: ABB, which has been active in Estonia since 1992, is the world’s largest producer of wind generators and one of Estonia’s largest foreign investors and exporters. “Export comprises over 90 percent of our production, yet we expect the government to provide even greater support for and promotion of export,” stressed Bo Henriksson, Country Manager of ABB Baltics.

The discussions also touched upon education. President Ilves was interested to know whether the government’s current educational policy satisfies the needs of large industrial companies. Bo Henriksson stated that most industrial enterprises expect the government to make a greater contribution to education in the field of technical engineering.

In 2008, ABB received the “Enterprise Award” presented by Enterprise Estonia. In 2007 and 2008, ABB also received the “Foreign Investor of the Year” award.
