According to the Head of State, the proposed negative supplementary budget requires debate, in which the opposition parties have an important role to play.

“Just now, Estonia needs politicians to cooperate and to have the will to take the standpoints of others into consideration. I have received confirmation from the representatives of the governing coalition that, this time, the parliament will hear the matter of the supplementary budget according to customary procedure. I hope the opposition will use the budgetary debate to introduce and defend their positions, as well as persuade their opponents, and during this critical period, not use procedural tactics to divert attention from the essentials – how to guarantee the government’s solvency and the fulfilment of the criteria necessary for transition to the euro,” President Ilves explained.

Last week the President of the Republic met with the chairmen of the coalition parties.
