17.04.2009

President Toomas Hendrik Ilves met yesterday with Jacek Saryusz-Wolski, the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament. President Toomas Hendrik Ilves met yesterday with Jacek Saryusz-Wolski, the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament.

The topics of discussion at the meeting included future developments in the European Union, which must continue to guarantee a strong voice and vote to all members of the Community – be they large or small. The European Union’s energy policy and role of the European Parliament in shaping the Community’s common foreign policy were also discussed.

President Ilves felt it important that the Commissioner for Enlargement in the future European Commission be responsible for strengthening the Eastern Partnership with the Community’s six partner states.

“It would be a logical and extremely necessary change if the countries that want to enact extensive democratic and economic reforms were given heightened attention by the European Commission, as well as the European Union more generally,” the Estonian Head of State said.
