President Ilves met with the representatives of the Confederation of Estonian Trade Unions in Kadriorg today, in order to discuss the status of the Employment Contracts Act that should come into force on July 1 President Toomas Hendrik Ilves met with the representatives of the Confederation of Estonian Trade Unions in Kadriorg today, in order to discuss the status of the Employment Contracts Act that should come into force on July 1. The situation on the Estonian labour market and possible increases in unemployment insurance payments were also discussed.

According to the Head of State, he expects the different parties of the job market to have a constructive dialogue and mostly talk of solutions.

“Unfortunately, in the current discussions, far too few progressive and new ideas are being heard. Rather, there is a competition to see who can propose the blackest scenario,” said President Ilves. He added that in a crisis situation all the social partners – trade unions, employers and government – must be ready for quick and flexible solutions. “Bureaucratic obstacles that, for example, currently prevent the implementation of labour market measures for the retraining and employment of unemployed workers, must be eliminated,” noted the Head of State.

The meeting was attended by Harri Taliga, Chairman of the CETU; Sander Vaikma, Head of the Power Engineers’ Union; and Kaia Vask, Chairman of the Estonian Seamen’s Union.

President Ilves will also meet this week with the representatives of Estonia’s largest business organizations.
