The Estonian Head of State met with the Latvian President

In Tartu today, President Toomas Hendrik Ilves met with Latvian Head of State Valdis Zatlers, who arrived in Estonia in connection with the celebration of the 10th anniversary of BALTDEFCOL, the Baltic Defense College.

Presidents Ilves and Zatlers spoke at length about the economic situation in the Baltic countries as well as the rest of the world.

“Our primary challenge is to restore confidence in the Baltic states, which will require the right economic and political decisions to be made in Tallinn, Riga, and Vilnius in order to affirm our possibilities for success and our internal stability,” the Estonian Head of State.

The Estonian and Latvian Heads of State also spoke about energy security and the creation of a common Baltic energy market by 2013 and confirmed the importance of creating an energy connection between the Baltic countries and Sweden. This presumes that a decision will be made soon the regarding the starting point for the underwater electric cable on the Baltic side.
