27.02.2009

“In ten years, BALTDEFCOL has acquired an indispensible role in the education of Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian officers,” President Toomas Hendrik Ilves said today at the formal ceremony marking the 10th anniversary of the Baltic Defense College. “I hope that in the near future a person who has graduated from this educational institution will rise to lead our defense forces.”

The Estonian Head of State thanked our allies in NATO and the European Union that have helped us create and develop BALTDEFCOL, which has educated almost 450 Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian officers to date.

“Just as we have received and are still receiving assistance and support from others, BALTDEFCOL has now become an educational institution where the officers of candidate and partner states of NATO can study,” President Ilves said. “This is our contribution to creating a zone of stability and security around Europe.”

Latvian President Valdis Zatlers, as well as the Baltic defense ministers and heads of the defense forces, attended the BALTDEFCOL jubilee ceremony.
