The President of the Republic made a decision to withdraw decorations

13.03.2009

President Toomas Hendrik Ilves signed a resolution today to withdraw the Order of the White Star, Fourth Class from Herman Simm, who has been criminally convicted of treason.

The Head of State also decided to withdraw the Order of the Cross of Terra Mariana, Fifth Class from Risto Mikael Teinonen, who wore it with the symbols of a country that occupied Estonia.

Pursuant to the Decorations Act, the President of the Republic may decide to withdraw a state decoration for the following reasons: if a court judgment comes into force whereby the person is convicted of an intentionally committed criminal offence; circumstances which existed before the bestowal of the decoration become evident, knowledge of which would have caused refusal to bestow a decoration on the person; or later conduct of the person has been so indecent that it would preclude the bestowal of a decoration on him or her.
