President Ilves: the difficult economic situation opens opportunities for new ideas

07.01.2009

“Complicated times open new opportunities for us,” President Toomas Hendrik Ilves said as the patron at the inauguration of the Year of Innovation. “Although many people are currently worried about the economic situation, it actually means that innovative ideas and innovation-minded people have a better chance to succeed,” the President said. “If nothing is broken, there is no need to fix anything.”

According to the Head of State, Estonia was a very backward country after 50 years in the Soviet Union. “Apparently, we are only now starting to understand that we are one of the most successful post-Communist countries because of the courage, innovation and dynamic reforms implemented during the 1990s,” the President noted.

“Estonia is too small to move forward by force. We can only improve our life through good counsel,” the Head of State affirmed. “I hope that the Year of Innovation will encourage us all to think anew and to promote the birth of new ideas.”
