27.10.2008

“Croatia’s progress on the road to the European Union and NATO is impressive,” President Toomas Hendrik Ilves said at a meeting with Gordan Jandroković, the Foreign Minister of Croatia on Friday.

The Estonian Head of State expressed his support for Croatia’s reform policy as a European Union and NATO candidate state. Croatia’s Foreign Minister thanked Estonia for its help and support.

At the meeting, President Ilves raised Croatia’s noteworthy contribution to NATO operations and recalled that Estonia has launched the process to approve the agreements for Croatia and Albania’s accession to the alliance. Croatia received an invitation to join NATO at the Bucharest Summit that took place in April.

Foreign Minister Jandroković provided an overview of the situation in the Western Balkans at the meeting, focusing on Serbia as well as Bosnia and Herzegovina.

President Ilves confirmed Estonia’s support for Serbia’s integration with the European Union. At the same time, he considered Bosnia and Herzegovina’s European Union prospects to be very important, which, however, depend primarily on the dedication and follow-up of the country itself.

Speaking about relations between Estonia and Croatia, President Ilves stressed that they are developing vigorously and a contribution should be made to economic cooperation, in which tourism is developing into one of the growing areas of common interest while at the same time, the interest of Estonian investors in Croatia has increased, especially in the areas of real estate, the hotel business, energy and information technology.
